2NE1 recently returned with music videos for the songs “Come Back Home” and “Happy” from their newly-released second album, and YG Entertainment head Yang Hyun Suk, who also edited the videos, personally explained the concept of the “Come Back Home” video.
“Come Back Home” required a production cost of 500,000,000 won (approx. $467,000), and has a sci-fi movie vibe. In a futuristic background created by CG, the 2NE1 members straddle the real and fantasy worlds.
Yang Hyun Suk explained to Star News, “While the content of the music video may be hard to understand, if you look at it from the perspective that happiness is the most important thing in this world, the purpose of the music video should become clearer. The music video is set in a future not too far off, where people, reminiscent of the film ‘The Matrix,’ enjoy living in a fantasy more so than the real world.”
“Even now, many people, rather than meeting with others and communicating in-person, are attached and addicted to their phones and games. I believe this has a direct relation to people’s enjoyment of fantasy worlds. Even if you go to a playground, there are so many children who are on their phones, and we imagined that as time passes, this phenomenon got worse, and people craved fantasy worlds even more.”
“In the music video, Sandara Park is heartbroken because the man she loves prefers to live in the fantasy world. For this reason, among others, Sandara and the other members, CL,Park Bom, and Minzy, enter the fantasy world and become warriors that destroy it, portraying the importance of reality and humanity.”
Yang Hyun Suk also explained why the music video was not shot around the choreography for the song. “Up until now, 2NE1 has shot many music videos with dance, and this time, we wanted to do something different. We tried to put a lot of time and effort into great CG production, and for that we invested $467,000.”
He added, “I’d be really thankful if everyone saw this music video as a new venture by 2NE1.”
On the other hand, the “Happy” music video that the group shot in LA is on the opposite end of the spectrum from “Come Back Home,” with bright colors and fashion, and a cute, animated feel.
2NE1 released their second album last month on February 27, after which the double titles “Come Back Home” and “Gotta Be You” took over the number one spot on Korean music charts. The second album will become available offline on March 7, and 2NE1 will have their first comeback stage on SBS Inkigayo on March 9.
